This morning was by far the most crowded I’ve seen it in a long time. It was like having not just two pro basketball teams on the court but more like six and then having all the fans on the court trying to take shots as well. Since surfing wasn’t actually possible I went in for a bit. The wind came up and a ton of people came in so I headed back out and pretty much surfed until dark.

Small wave sleds
Since I’ve been back from Kauai the waves have been super tiny. So…I figured instead of posting pics of lake La Jolla, I’d share what I’ve been riding.
It’s pretty key to have some super light, small wave boards to give you every advantage when the waves offer no power.
Wednesday I rode my 5’6″x18.75″x2.38″ Dozer. I’ve been loving this shape. Not only has it been working well in the small stuff but it is a great board for medium size stuff as well since it has the standard thrusters set up. On this board I order the tail block width a little narrower than stock to help make it a bit more responsive in waves that don’t provide enough face to do more than little flicky turns.
Thursday I rode a 5’7″x18.63″x2.25″ Choppa model. This board is just plain interesting. It is a frakenstein looking thing. The board starts out as a slayer but then the back end is chopped off, hence the name “choppa”. The result is a very wide square tail which releases up, over and through sections super easy. That wide tail also makes it super fast and easy to land airs and anything else you can do on the small days. It definitely rides different than any other board I have but in a very fun way.
The other go to board that I ride when it’s absolutely tiny is my 5’6″x18.86″x2.16″ Hustler. This board just goes in anything. It especially kills it on those days when it’s ankle to knee high. The quad fin set up along with the Venturi concave make this board so fast that it almost doesn’t matter how bad the conditions are.
